This season, CASC is running volleyball teams for girls and boys from 10u-16u. The club volleyball season starts in January and runs until either late April or early/mid May. The exact end date depends how far each local team progresses in playoffs, and for travel teams it depends on when Nationals are being held for their age group.
Local Teams
CASC Local Teams are a great option for anyone who has a busy schedule and cannot commit to a travel team. These teams usually have 1 practice and 1 game per week. The practices will be in your home community, and the games will either be a “home” game or an “away” game. Away games will be held in another city/town in Central Alberta. For example, a Sylvan Lake Local Team will have some home games, as well as some away games in Red Deer, Lacombe, Bentley.
Travel Teams
CASC Travel Teams are a bigger commitment than our local teams. These teams will practice 2-3 times per week, and compete in 6-8 tournaments on weekends. Their tournaments include Volleyball Alberta Premiers, Provincials, and Nationals, as well as other privately run tournaments in Alberta. Travel teams do not have weekly league games, although these teams arrange scrimmages against other teams during weeks without tournaments.
Each age group is based on which year a player is born. If an athlete is born between Sept-Dec they have the option of playing one year down. This is a Volleyball Canada rule.
- 10u: 2015 Birthdates
- 11u: 2014 Birthdates
- 12u: 2013 Birthdates
- 13u: 2012 Birthdates
- 14u: 2011 Birthdates
- 15u: 2010 Birthdates
- 16u: 2009 Birthdates
The age categories are strictly enforced for Travel Teams, because they compete in Provincials and Nationals. Local Teams are mixed teams that might have a couple age groups together. For local teams, we care more about skill level and maturity than age.
Local Teams: Fees for the season will be between $450-$615. We will finalize the fees for each team before any player is asked to commit to a team.
Travel Teams: Fees for the season will be between $1500-$2450. The exact amount depends on the number of tournaments the team is entering and the number of practices per week. We will finalize the team fees before any player is asked to commit to a team.
**CASC does not let finances prevent any youth player from joining** Please contact us if you need financial assistance.
Our Local Team leagues are divided up by level. Each team is mixed and could have a couple different ages. Our goal with placement tryouts is to form teams with players who are all at an equivalent skill level. This allows the practices and games to be fun and competitive for all athletes!
There are 3 levels of Local Teams. There are Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4 Local Teams. Level 1 players have a special once per week program that is a mix of training and modified games for beginners.
The tournaments listed below are the VA (Volleyball Alberta) and VC (Volleyball Canada) tournaments for each age of travel team. Each team will also compete in additional private tournaments that will be added to the schedule later. We expect most teams to compete in 6-8 tournaments. Some of the private tournaments are single day instead of multi day.

At CASC, each athlete only needs to attend one tryout. We will evaluate each players and see which local team and possibly which travel team they would be eligible for. This makes it simple for new players to join CASC! Sign up for a tryout, and we will let you know which options you are eligible for after the evaluations are complete. Tryout signup is available at the bottom of the page.
We often get asked about what our coaches are looking for at tryouts in order to assign each player to a Local Team level and whether or not to offer them a spot on a Travel Team. The list below shows some of the things we are looking for. The list is generally ordered from basic to advanced. This is a general list and it applies to many ages. We do not expect younger players to have many (or any) of these skills.
- Awareness of the court, ball, and teammates
- Calling the ball (“mine!”) before playing it.
- Ability to pass the ball on your arms (not your hands!)
- Ability to set the ball
- Ability to serve the ball over the net (underhand or overhand)
- Ability to do a correct attacking approach and hit the ball over the net.
- Ability to pass and set accurately in a controlled environment
- Ability to hit the ball without spin (float serve) and with spin (attack)
- Ability to back set and side set
- Ability to pass accurately in any direction by angling your platform.
- Ability to do correct blocking footwork and a clean block “press”
- Ability to set a high ball consistently to either pin using hands or forearms.
- Ability to receive serves consistently with good technique
- Ability to call an attacking option mid-game consistently (High, Go, Black, Shoot, Hut, 1, 3, 6, Red, A, Pipe, C, D, Wide, etc)
- Ability to adjust attacking timing based on which play the team is running
- [Setters] Ability to quickly choose and execute the correct footwork option
- [Attackers] Ability to see the court and blockers and choose a good attacking option
- Ability to read the attackers and servers on an opposing team
- Ability to make in-game adjustments to blocking and defensive strategy based on tendencies or adjustments that the opposing team makes.
Local Team Coaches – Free team fees for your child
Coaches for our local teams have the following roles. We do not need these coaches to have much (or any) volleyball coaching experience. Our CASC lead coaches will lead practices and will lead the skill development process. Local Team coaches are primarily there to encourage the players and be a main team contact for games.
- Attend Local Team games
- Encourage your team
- Help your team to follow instructions given by a CASC lead coach.
Travel Team Coaches – Discounted or free team fees for your child and/or a coaching honorarium (depending on level of involvement)
Coaches for our Travel Teams will need to have some volleyball experience or coaching experience. You do not need to be a volleyball expert to coach a travel team, however, it will be a significant commitment. Our CASC lead coaches will be involved with our travel teams to work on skill development and strategies. Here are some of the roles a Travel Team coach will have.
- Complete NCCP training modules required for coaching. CASC will reimburse all coach training costs.
- Run practices and attend tournaments with your team. CASC lead coaches will attend tournaments and practices to support our teams whenever possible.
- Lead practices and training. CASC provides pre-made practice plans and coach educational content + drill ideas.
Travel Team Manager – Discounted fees for your child
A team manager is a smaller role than a head coach. This role can often be done by the head coach of a team if they are enthusiastic and involved.
- Coordinate carpooling and arrival times for tournaments.
- Coordinate hotel and travel accommodations (if needed).
- Coordinate food for the team (if the team chooses to do group meals at tournaments).
- Coordinate with other parents about roles such as being a linesperson or scorekeeper at tournaments.
- **CASC will provide details to all team managers regarding their role. No experience is required**
